Biography

Wow I am still playing music.

What an awesome adventure to be associated with such an amazing bunch of guys (The Kitchen). I guess I am the Rubin Kinkaid (the guy that gets the gigs) of this band which is a humbling position when you’re surrounded by such amazing talent. Finally we have a band that totally connects from family life to our full time careers to playing music together and being great friends.

I started playing drums at the age of 7. My Nana Sylvia bought me my first drum set from Sears. Ok it had non tunable heads but it was better then the Tupperware I was pounding on. So my parents decided enough was enough this boy needs to channel his energy before his grade school teachers have a nervous breakdown. I started taking lessons at the age of 8 at the Conservatory of Music in Hamilton. My teachers name was Mary Thurston she rocked solid. At the age of 10, I was entered into an Ontario Conservatory of Music drum competition at McMaster University. That was cool I had to write out my entire drum solo and perform it, I ended up winning first place.

First band – Axis

60 & 70’s cover band. I was 16 at the time I loved to play Zeppelin, Cream, and Jimmy Hendrix. Solid lay it down rock. BTW my parents bought me a clear Acrylic (Zicko shells) Ludwig hardware drum set. This was a serious deep sounding kit that was very loud. So while all this was going on my sisters Penny and Gay yes that’s her name Gay made me sing harmony’s with them in the basement. Yes Abba was our favourite band.

Fugitive

OK now I was into the Alternative rock scene I was 18 playing a million bars with Phil Reynolds from Ancaster, Ross Barlow of Ancaster and another guy which I forget his name. Then I met a local guy from the neighborhood named Jeff Rosnick. He joined the Fugitive band as a bass player. So Jeff and I out grew the Fugitive band and started our own project called The Hut Museum.

Hut Mueseum

I know what the F… is a Hut Museum? Well it’s a collage of different musical taste that forms a musical museum in fact the Hut Museum. So Jeff, Mike his brother who played bass and the keyboard player from the fugitive (Ross Barlow) set out to form our own little band.( during this time I took off to backpack through Europe for two months with my friend Andray Harrison). Well we did alternative music from the 80’s CFNY stuff. We played many gigs together (if you meet me ask me about Aylmer) and the band decided to write and play all original music. So what’s next, Ross went off to school to be a Dentist. We brought drummer Paul Simmon in to take my place on drums. I picked up the acoustic guitar and continued with lead vocals, with Jeff on lead guitar and Mike on bass. So we had a good go of it. Playing numerous clubs between Hamilton and Toronto, we ended up recording our original tunes (many of which I wrote while backpacking through Europe).

We were able to sustain top 10 on the charts at CFMU McMaster University radio station. Then our big not so big break. We had some serious looks from WEA records when we were playing Toronto.

Then Disaster struck the Band broke up. We were too young to deal with a group dynamic and we all had our artistic pride that we would not compromise. Too bad the band made some cool music.

That’s it I sold my drums and stop playing for 10 years. I settled down got married, had kids and then I decided to buy my adult drum kit (Gretsch Catalina) and did some playing at my local united church with local hero Jim Witter ( my good friend and Neighbor). Suddenly I needed more.

The Kitchen

After an ongoing career as a registered nurse and now a medical device sales rep, I met Phil Main at a kids Birthday party and started to talk about forming a corporate band. I also spent many hours with my brother Kenny the chef talking about how music inspires him to cook and how food can influence music hence the name (The Kitchen). Phil and I set out to play music we grew up with. We are fortunate to bring in Peter Kirkpatrick (bass and marketing guru) and Mike Stevenson (piano and overall a very nice guy) on board to round out the Kitchen and take it to the next level. We have become serious playing musicians who rock solid at events, you will not forget. Next step original music. Stay tuned and Peace. Thank you for reading my story and visiting our site (Thanks to Peter Kirkpatrick for being the webmaster of our site... You're welcome says Pete!).

BTW look out for my son who is taking drum lessons and laying it down at the age of seven. (THIS STORY WILL NOW START OVER).
